Comparison

SplitRig vs Blackmagic Camera

SplitRig records both of your iPhone's cameras at once, up to 4K on the rear of supported iPhones. Blackmagic Camera records one camera at a time, with cinema controls.

In short

Pick SplitRig when you want both cameras in the same shot: front and back recorded together into one video on one iPhone, with the rear camera in up to 4K (40 Mbps at 30 fps) on supported iPhones, 60 fps in Action Cam, stabilization you choose, and four layouts you can switch mid-shot, free. Blackmagic Camera records one camera at a time, with ProRes and Apple Log for cinema workflows, and the two work well side by side.

Where SplitRig pulls ahead

  • Both cameras, one iPhone, one video. SplitRig records the front and back cameras at the same time into one file, with the rear camera in up to 4K (40 Mbps at 30 fps) on supported iPhones, so there is nothing to line up in an editor.
  • Four layouts you can switch mid-recording: Picture in Picture, Split Screen (adjustable from 30/70 to 70/30), Face Mode (your face over the rear shot, background removed, no green screen) and Single Camera.
  • Eight overlay widgets written into the video: seven live metrics (speed, distance, altitude, pace, goal gauge, sound level, duration) plus the SplitRig logo.
  • Hands-free control built in: the SplitRig app for Apple Watch (record, switch layout, zoom, mute), your AirPods stem as a shutter (iOS 26, AirPods with H2), the Camera Control button (iPhone 16 and later) and the volume buttons.
  • 60 fps in Action Cam with the steadiest stabilization level, stabilization you choose (Off, Standard or Stable) while both cameras record, and a smart recording engine tuned with Apple's native camera features. Plus a teleprompter that never appears in the saved video. Free with every feature unlocked, on iPhone 11 and later.

What Blackmagic Camera is built for

Every app has its focus. Here is what Blackmagic Camera is designed around, so you can pick the right tool for each shot.

  • Built for cinema capture: Apple ProRes (422 HQ, 422, LT and Proxy), Apple Log, H.265 and H.264, frame rates up to 120 fps, and one-tap control of shutter angle, ISO and white balance.
  • Multicam across several devices: one iPhone works as the controller and syncs recording on the others, with timecode input from an external generator.
  • A Blackmagic Cloud workflow: proxies upload while you shoot and sync into DaVinci Resolve projects for editors anywhere. The app itself is also free.

Common questions

Can Blackmagic Camera record the front and back camera at the same time?
Blackmagic Camera's App Store listing and its tech specs page do not list simultaneous front and back recording (checked September 23, 2026). Its multicam feature links several devices, with one iPhone as the controller and the others recording in sync. SplitRig records both cameras of one iPhone at the same time into one synced video, on iPhone 11 and later.
Do I need two iPhones to record myself and the scene at the same time?
No. SplitRig records your front and back cameras at once on one iPhone 11 or later and saves them as one video, in Picture in Picture, Split Screen, Face Mode or Single Camera. You can switch layouts during the recording, so the finished clip is ready to post without an edit.
Can I use SplitRig and Blackmagic Camera together?
Yes. They are built for different jobs: Blackmagic Camera for cinema capture with ProRes and Apple Log, SplitRig for recording both cameras at once into one video, with the rear camera in up to 4K on supported iPhones. Keep both on your iPhone and open whichever fits the shot. SplitRig is an independent app and is not affiliated with Blackmagic Design.
Is SplitRig free like Blackmagic Camera?
Yes. Both apps are free to download. SplitRig has no in-app purchases, no subscription, no ads and no account, so every layout, overlay, remote control and 4K recording on supported iPhones works from first launch.

Pick SplitRig if

You want yourself and the scene in the same video from one iPhone: reactions, vlogs, walk-and-talks, rides with a live speedometer. Pick a layout, switch it mid-recording, and post the file as it is.

Pick Blackmagic Camera if

You are building a cinema or broadcast workflow around one camera per iPhone: ProRes and Apple Log capture, timecode, multicam across several devices, and Blackmagic Cloud with DaVinci Resolve.
